What we get
adventuring alone
reading time: 5 minutes
Traveling solo is for many still a scary concept. It requires embracing solitude; in fact, but for many, that’s the appeal. However, solo trips can be immensely rewarding. The benefits are numerous. Not only that you make your own plans, eat whatever you want, have deep connections w/ native people, stay longer or leave sooner, traveling solo can have a positive impact on your personality as well. I’m sure, you’ll earn more about yourself and grow as a person.
Why solo adventuring is good for you
Personal Growth
I’m sure you know the cliché: “Get lost, find yourself”. Or as John Muir said: “Between every two pine trees there is a door leading to a new way of life”. And: I just have to agree with that. Solo traveling will let you grow. You’ll discover your independence and how you behave or react in unpredictable situations. Additionally, the sense of accomplishment that comes when you successfully complete your first solo journey is hard to match.
Personal
Solo adventuring also means having the ultimate freedom to do whatever you want. Sometimes you might feel lonely, but first and foremost you will enjoy all the possibilities you have during your trip. You can travel to any place you want, whether you already have been there or you maybe have never been before. You can meet natives, collect lasting memories and much more.
It’s an adventure
No matter what trip you plan, it will definitely feel adventurous. Things will happen, that would never happen within the same confines.
So, how can you start adventuring alone?
- Step one: Write down what you want to do.
- Step two: Do your research! Find out what you will need to do it. What equipment do you need, what maps, what
- Step three: Visit your local outdoor adventure or sport store.
- Step four: If you’re insecure, take a class! They’ll teach you how to use the equipment and everything that’s important!
- Step five: You also can visit group events. There you’ll meet other people with similar interests.
- Step six: Go solo! Start with easy or familiar trail hikes. This will give you a level of comfort.
- Step Seven: Now move just a bit out of your comfort zone and build on your courage. For example: Find a local place that you haven’t explored.
- Step Eight: After you have built a level of skills, you’re ready to adventure solo someplace you never have.
Is solo adventuring safe?
This is one of the most asked questions I got. I think research is the key: Some places are more dangerous than others. Check the travel advise for the certain region or talk to locals or people who have already been there. Also be aware of your skills and your knowledge – especially in the sort of sport you do.
